How to Make Cold Brew at Home for $1 a Cup (vs. $6 at Large Chains)
Share
A 16oz cold brew at most major chains runs $5 to $7. With the right beans  — that same cup costs under $1 at home.
The Ratio
1 cup coarsely ground coffee to 4 cups cold water. This makes a concentrate — dilute 1:1 to serve. Prefer it ready-to-drink? Use 1:8.
How to Make It
- Add grounds to a jar or pitcher. Pour cold water over and stir to saturate.
- Cover and refrigerate 18–24 hours.
- Strain through a fine mesh strainer lined with a paper coffee filter.
- Store in the fridge up to 2 weeks. Dilute 1:1 to serve over ice.
Three Things That Matter
Grind coarse — fine grinds over-extract and turn bitter. Add a pinch of salt to the dry grounds before brewing. Use quality beans — cold brew extracts a lot, and low-quality coffee tastes flat even when done right.

The Cost
A bag of specialty beans makes 16–20 ready-to-drink cups. That's $0.30–$0.40 per cup — under $1 all-in. The chain version around: $5.95, no refills.
